Though this is the first book I’ve read in 2020, I would not be surprised if it turns out to be the best book I will read this year. James K. A. Smith shows how accessible and needed the 4th-century theologian and church father’s wisdom and guidance is for the deepest longings of our hearts today. Augustine, though brilliant, was not an ivory tower theologian, but someone who struggled, sinned, and longed for meaning and hope as we do.

Reading this book is a journey into two worlds: Augustine’s and our own. As you discover the life and times of the Doctor of Grace, you also discover a path forward on your own spiritual journey - or rather, you discover the God who came down from heaven on a journey to rescue you and walk with you through the twists and turns, ups and downs of life.
